My story

My Journey: From Travel Agent to Life on the Road
If someone had told me thirty years ago that one day I would be living in a campervan, spending my days paragliding, surfing, and exploring Morocco at my own pace, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Life has a way of taking us in unexpected directions.
My name is Abdelkrim, and this is my story.
A Life in Tourism
My journey in tourism began in 1994 when I graduated from the High Institute of Tourism in Tangier. Like many young graduates, I was full of dreams and eager to help people discover the beauty of Morocco.
Soon after, I started working in the travel industry and eventually became the manager of my own travel agency.
For more than 23 years, I organized trips, welcomed visitors from around the world, and introduced them to the incredible diversity of my country.
I loved my job.
Tourism wasn’t just my profession—it became part of who I was.
When Life Changes Your Plans
Life doesn’t always follow the path we imagine.
Family challenges and difficult personal circumstances eventually made me realize that I needed a different life. By the age of 40, I decided to retire from the travel agency business.
At the time, it felt like the end of one chapter.
Looking back, I realize it was actually the beginning of another.
Sometimes, the hardest decisions become the best ones.
Learning Never Stops
Although I had left the travel business, I wasn’t ready to stop learning.
The tourism industry was changing rapidly. The internet had transformed the way people booked holidays, and I wanted to understand where the future was heading.
In 2016, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering of Ecological and Landscape Tourism Projects from the University of Beni Mellal.
Going back to university later in life taught me an important lesson:
Age should never stop us from learning something new.
The Day I Learned to Fly
Since I was young, I had dreamed of flying.
In 2006, I discovered paragliding.
From the very first flight, I was hooked.
It wasn’t only the adrenaline that attracted me. It was the incredible feeling of freedom.
When you’re flying, everyday worries disappear.
There is only the sky, the wind, and the landscape beneath your feet.
Even today, every flight reminds me why I fell in love with this sport.
Discovering Vanlife
In 2019, just a couple of months before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world, my wife and I bought our campervan.
At first, vanlife required some adjustments.
One of my wife’s biggest concerns was simple: “What if I need a bathroom?”
Like many people, she imagined living on the road would be uncomfortable.
But little by little, we found our rhythm.
Whenever she needs a shower or proper facilities, we simply stop at a public bathroom or campsite. We learned that most problems are much smaller than they first appear.
Today, vanlife feels completely natural to us.
Our Simple Daily Life
People often imagine that life on the road is full of constant adventure.
The truth is much simpler.
We usually wake up around nine o’clock.
After breakfast, we exercise for about an hour.
Then we look at the weather.
If the wind is good, I go paragliding.
If the waves are better than the wind, I go surfing.
After lunch, I enjoy a short nap.
Later in the afternoon, I spend some time reading before my wife and I go for a walk together, exploring the places where we have parked for the night.
We don’t own a television.
We don’t miss it.
Instead, we enjoy conversations, books, sunsets, and the sound of nature.
In the evening, we usually go to bed early, ready for another peaceful day.
What the Road Has Taught Me
After years of traveling, I have learned something that no school could ever teach.
Don’t spend your entire life chasing money.
Of course, money is necessary.
But beyond a certain point, more money doesn’t necessarily mean more happiness.
Some of my happiest moments have cost almost nothing.
Watching the sunset from a quiet beach.
Sharing a cup of Moroccan mint tea.
Flying above the Atlas Mountains.
Reading a good book beside the ocean.
Walking hand in hand with my wife.
These moments remind me that the richest life isn’t always the most expensive one.
Why I Created Morocco Unrushed
After spending decades working in tourism, I noticed that many visitors try to see everything in just a few days.
They rush from Marrakech to Fes, from the Sahara to Chefchaouen, always watching the clock.
But Morocco isn’t a country to be rushed.
Its beauty is found in the small villages, the quiet beaches, the mountain roads, the conversations with local people, and the peaceful evenings under the stars.
That is why I created Morocco Unrushed.
This website isn’t only a collection of travel guides.
It is an invitation to slow down.
To travel differently.
To discover Morocco beyond the famous tourist attractions.
And perhaps, along the way, to discover that the best journeys are not measured by how many places you visit, but by how deeply you experience them.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
I hope our paths cross somewhere on the road.
